Why calm software matters in an age of AI

June 2026

AI makes it easy to add more: more suggestions, more alerts, more things that want your attention. But more power should not mean more noise. The best tools stay quiet until you need them.

That we work with AI ourselves is not a contradiction but the precondition: more on that in People and AI.

We hold on to a few simple principles. Software should respect your focus. It should be clear about what it does. And it should leave you in control, even when clever things happen behind the scenes.

Calm is not the absence of capability. It is capability with restraint. That is the kind of software we want to build.

A small example of it sits out in the open: a focus timer with no account and no ads, which stores nothing and starts over on reload.
